1 The mechanism of injury is typically a fall with the wrist extended and in ulnar deviation. Scapholunate dissociation (SLD) is the most common type of carpal instability. A person who experiences pain in the back of the wrist or the thumb side of the wrist (following a fall) should be examined for scapho-lunate dissociation. A grip compression view or wrist in ulnar deviation may be necessary in addition to PA/lateral views.
